Weight loss and other beneficial effects of grapefruit in human

Biochemistry, animal and human studies have shown that grapefruit should be a healthy fruit and have weight loss effect. Two clinical trial results have been selected in this simple review since researchers conducting the two studies have no conflict of interest.

Grapefruit Clinical Trial 1:
Following a 3-week washout diet low in fruits and vegetables, 74 overweight adults were randomized to either the control diet (32 people) or daily grapefruit (42 people) in the amount of one half of a fresh grapefruit with each meal (3 times daily) for 6 weeks:
  1. Grapefruit consumption was associated with modest weight loss (-0.61 kg).
  2. A significant reduction in waist circumference (-2.45 cm)
  3. A significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (-3.21 mm Hg) compared with baseline values.
  4. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein significantly were decreased by -11.7 mg/dL and -18.7 mg/dL, respectively.
Improvements were observed in circulating lipids of those consuming grapefruit compared with baseline values.

Grapefruit Clinical Trial 2:
91 Obese patients were randomized to different group and took supplement or placebo 3 times a day. Data were measured at the beginning and end of 12 weeks:
  1. The half of a fresh grapefruit group had lost 1.6 kg of body weight
  2. The 237 ml grapefruit juice group had lost 1.5 kg
  3. The grapefruit capsule group (made of 207 ml juice) had lost 1.1 kg
  4. The placebo group had lost 0.3 kg
  5. Half of a fresh grapefruit eaten before meals was associated with significant weight loss.
  6. In metabolic syndrome patients, insulin resistance was improved with fresh grapefruit.
Analysis demonstrated a significantly greater weight loss in the grapefruit, grapefruit capsule, and grapefruit juice groups compared with placebo.
