Lupine seed consumption can control chronic hyperglycemic diseases

Lupine (Lupinus species) is a plant in the legume family (Fabaceae) and native to southern Europe, parts of Asia and western North America.

Lupine seed and its oil are edible.
Lupin is extracted from lupine seeds and high in protein and dietary fiber.
Lupine seed paste or poultice can be used to treat ulcers and sores topically.

Oral lupine seeds also have following beneficial effects:
  1. Research reveals that lupin foods can reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
  2. In a phase II clinical trial, cooked seeds of Lupinus mutabilis reduced blood glucose and improved insulin sensitivity in dysglycemic human volunteers, and did not change blood glucose and insulin levels in normoglycemic human volunteers. Soy intake as study control group didn’t alter glucose and insulin level. None of the volunteers in the trial presented side effects.
  3. A randomised, double-blind, parallel group clinical study showed that lupin protein has hypocholesterolaemic activity and clinical benefits.
  4. Lupine seeds kill parasitic worms and excite the menstrual discharge.
  5. Lupine seeds are diuretic, emmenagogue, hypoglycaemic and vermifuge.
Lupine seeds contain 32 - 40% protein and 8 - 12% fatty oil.
The newer garden hybrids of today are poisonous because they are full of toxic alkaloids and should never be eaten. If the seed is bitter this is due to the presence of toxic alkaloids and the seed should be thoroughly leached by soaking it and then discarding the soak water before cooking.
