Passion fruit peel (PFP) is safe, convenient and effective in relieving asthma, cough, knee osteoarthritis and diabetes. Passion fruits is a legal hallucinogenic drink.

Patients with asthma were studied in a 4-week randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial with oral administration of PFP extract (150 mg daily) or placebo pills. PFP extract resulted in a marked increase in forced vital capacity, as placebo showed no effect. No adverse effect was reported by any of the study participants.

Oral intake of PFP extract reduces pain and stiffness and improves physical function in adult patients with knee osteoarthritis. Thirty-three OA patients were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with parallel-group design. The results show that PFP substantially alleviated osteoarthritis symptoms. This beneficial effect of PFP may be due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Scientists studied the ability of PFP flour in reducing insulin resistance. The study was conducted in 43 diabetes patients and found a significant decrease in fasting plasma glucose levels 30 and 60 days after intake of passion fruit peel flour. The HbA1c values were reduced at 60 days of treatment. The resistance was decreased after treatment with yellow PFP flour. Pectin (soluble fibers) in the fruit peel could be the active principles.

CNS stimulant, active against gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Harmine is used as a component in South American hallucinogenic drink.
