Following published studies have provided more evidences that grape seed extracts are strong antioxidants and possess many beneficial effects on human.
Grape seed extract improves micro-circulation which may explain why it inhibits leg swelling and boosts cognitive ability.
1. Proanthocyanidin-rich grape seed extract suppressed leg swelling in office working women:
Leg swelling is a big problem of modern working women. The effectiveness of the intake of grape seed extract on leg swelling in healthy Japanese women during prolonged sitting was evaluated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial. Single and 14 day intake of grape seed extract reduced leg volume distension, body extra-cellular fluid and leg water significantly.
2. Grape-seed proanthocyanidin extract suppress bone destruction in auto-immune arthritis:
Chronic autoimmune inflammation observed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disrupts the balance between bone resorption and formation and causes bone and joint destruction. Shown in figure, natural grape-seed proanthocyanidin extract can reverse most of the bone destruction caused by arthritis inflammation.
3. Protective effect of grape seed proanthocyanidine extract in cold ischemia-reperfusion injury of the transplanted kidney was suggested.
4. Grape seed proanthocyanidin lowers brain oxidative stress:
There is growing concern over the increasing instances of decline in cognitive abilities with aging in human. Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) in treating age-related oxidative stress and accumulation of lipofuscin on the cognitive ability in rats was studied. GSPE lowered blood glucose, lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide level in their hippocampus. In addition, GSPE significantly improved cognitive performance in age groups. GSPE could be a neuro-protectant in the hippocampus and in preventing cognitive loss.
